Frequently asked questions

What happens at my first appointment?

Your first appointment is a full 60-minute assessment. We'll go through your health history, what's bothering you, how it started, and what makes it better or worse. I'll do a physical assessment and, depending on what I find, may start treatment the same day. You'll leave with a clear diagnosis and a plan.

Is physiotherapy covered by insurance?

Most extended health benefits plans cover physiotherapy. Coverage varies by plan. Check your benefits booklet or call your insurer to confirm your amounts and whether a referral is required. OHIP does not cover outpatient physiotherapy.

Is acupuncture covered?

Acupuncture provided by a registered physiotherapist is typically billed under physiotherapy benefits, not as a separate acupuncture benefit. Check your specific plan for details.

Do I need a referral?

No. Physiotherapists in Ontario are direct access practitioners. You can book directly without seeing a doctor first. Some insurance plans may require a referral for reimbursement. Check your policy before your first visit.

How long will recovery take?

It depends on the injury and how long it's been present. Soft tissue injuries typically respond in 6 to 8 weeks. Fractures take 4 to 6 weeks to heal, plus 8 to 12 weeks of rehabilitation. Post-surgical recovery varies significantly. I'll give you a realistic, honest timeline at your first assessment.

Does physiotherapy hurt?

Generally, no. Some techniques, particularly manual therapy or dry needling, can cause temporary discomfort. It should never be unbearable. I check in throughout every session and adjust based on your feedback.

How long is each session?

Initial assessments are 60 minutes. Follow-up sessions are typically 30 to 45 minutes. You will not be rushed.

Can you treat disc problems without an MRI?

Yes. Most disc-related conditions can be assessed and treated clinically without imaging. An MRI can be helpful to confirm a diagnosis but is rarely required to start effective treatment. I'll tell you honestly if I think you need one.

What should I wear?

Wear or bring clothes you can move in. For lower body injuries, shorts are ideal. For upper body or back, a tank top or loose t-shirt works well.

What if my pain comes back?

Pain returning after treatment is common, especially with repetitive-use injuries tied to desk work. The goal is not just to fix the acute problem but to give you the tools to manage it long-term. We address root causes, not just symptoms.
